Why It Matters

A Progressive Technology Education

Summerhill's technology programme is intentionally designed to build on itself - from hands-on block coding in the Nursery, to real programming languages in College, to understanding how artificial intelligence is reshaping the world. Every student graduates digitally confident.

Logical Thinking

Writing code trains the brain to break complex problems into smaller, solvable steps - a skill that transfers to every subject and every career.

Creative Problem-Solving

Technology at Summerhill is never passive. Students design, build, test and iterate - experiencing the full creative loop of genuine engineering.

Future-Ready Confidence

80% of future jobs will require science, technology and mathematics skills. Our students are prepared - not just to use technology, but to shape it.

LEGO coding in Nursery at Summerhill School

Nursery School

LEGO Education & Early STEAM

Summerhill Nursery introduces coding through LEGO Education - a serious STEAM-focused branch of LEGO that gives teachers a playful, hands-on way to engage children in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Our programme is led by Rosa Adonis, our LEGO-trained facilitator.

STEAM Park (Ages 3–5)

Constructing a Theme Park with DUPLO bricks - students explore gears, motion, measurement and problem-solving.

Early Simple Machines (Ages 4–5)

Gears, levers, pulleys and wheels to explore real-world science concepts and build critical thinking.

Coding Express Train (Ages 5+)

Basic coding language combining digital and physical elements - looping, sequencing and conditional coding.

Preparatory School

Coding, Robotics & STEAM

The CAPS curriculum includes dedicated Coding and Robotics outcomes for Grades R–9. Summerhill Prep exceeds these requirements, providing a comprehensive programme using leading platforms and hands-on tools. Students have dedicated I.T. lessons each week, and an annual Coding and Robotics Week.

Foundation Phase (Gr R–3)

Pattern Recognition, Algorithms & Coding, Robotics Skills, Internet & E-Communication and Application Skills.

Intersen Phase (Gr 4–7)

Advanced Algorithms & Coding, Robotics Skills, Internet & E-Communication and Application Skills.

Robotics & Engineering

Bringing Code to Life

Robotics brings the abstract world of coding into the physical realm. When students program a robot to navigate a track, respond to sensors or complete a task, they experience the cause-and-effect of their code in a way that no screen alone can replicate.

Summerhill's robotics programme uses platforms including SAM Labs and dedicated LEGO robotics kits - preparing students not just to operate technology, but to design and direct it.

Artificial Intelligence

AI Readiness, Education & Safety

Artificial intelligence is already reshaping how we work, learn and communicate. At Summerhill, we believe every student deserves to understand AI - not just as a user, but as a critical, informed participant. We teach students to engage with AI thoughtfully, ethically and safely.

AI Literacy

Understanding How AI Works

Students learn what AI actually is - machine learning, large language models, data training and algorithmic decision-making. Demystifying AI is the first step to using it well.

What machine learning is and how it learns
How AI tools like chatbots generate responses
The difference between AI and human intelligence
Where AI is already present in everyday life

AI in Education

Using AI as a Learning Tool

AI tools can be powerful educational aids when used with intention and integrity. We teach students how to use AI responsibly to support - not replace - their own thinking and creativity.

AI-assisted research and information verification
Using AI for brainstorming and drafting
Academic integrity and avoiding over-reliance
Prompt engineering and critical evaluation of outputs

AI Safety & Ethics

Critical, Ethical Citizenship

With AI comes responsibility. Students engage with the serious ethical questions that AI raises - bias, privacy, misinformation and the long-term consequences of automated systems.

Bias and fairness in AI systems
Deepfakes, misinformation and digital trust
Data privacy and what AI tools collect
The future of work and human-AI collaboration

Our Commitment

Preparing Students for an AI-Shaped World

Summerhill's approach to AI is neither fearful nor uncritical. We prepare students to enter a world where AI is a daily reality - giving them the knowledge to use it effectively, the ethics to use it responsibly, and the confidence to adapt as the technology evolves.

Digital Citizenship

Online safety, privacy, responsible use of technology and respectful digital communication.

Information Literacy

Fact-checking, source evaluation and critical thinking in the age of AI-generated content.

Ethical Thinking

Engaging with the moral questions technology raises - in the classroom and beyond.

Future Readiness

Equipping students to adapt, retrain and thrive as the world of work continues to evolve.
